Workshop with secondary school  - Alivola - Step 6 - Photo and Video - January 10, 2013

1 - This is the mechanism to discover: the oscillating lever: the circular motion of the wheel turns into a regular oscillatory movement. 2 - Take a look at our tablet. The amplitude of the oscillation of the arm changes depending on the diameter of the wheel.  3 - Sixth day of lab. The school teacher Stefania Cesare introduces the fifth mechanism, "OLO", which continues, in presentations, to be concealed.
Will be revealed as always in cases of absolute necessity ...
4 - This mechanism is difficult to conceive, and it is complex to implement, but we are at the sixth lesson, and we try ... 5 - Is also necessary to apply to the box a support from the side which normally is empty, so that one of the horizontal stick has a support. 6 - We ask students to make greater use of the notebook to draw a working hypothesis,
7 - without neglecting the practical experimentation with materials, which is always the basis of the activity. We, therefore, provide all the materials needed for construction. 8 - Many students have seen and reviewed the site Clohe during the Christmas holidays, and in particular the page on "how to build a Automata" 9 - Also for this reason then, almost everyone understands quickly the structure.
Design and experimentation go together. Although the students have visited the site and know what to expect, we know that there is a difference between understanding how a mechanism works and remember, without seeing them, all the details of its construction. This requires a lot of attention and a continuous feed-back between vision and memory during the observation.
10 - During this session, we asked the students who understand first the mechanism to help others. 11 - It's a way to work: some students are better in construction, other in decoration. 12 - So even small groups working together are formed by putting together different skills.
Was Don Milani, in his book "Letter to a Professor," to tell how in the small school of Barbiana (Mugello, Florence) older students older students teach younger students with great success. See www.barbiana.it
13 - After the realization of the mechanism we pass to the figures in motion, 14 - that are drawn on notebook and then cut out from sheets of colored rubber. 15 - This is the first mechanism with a dolphin ready to jump in the waves.
16 - Some students have brought from home materials to recycle. 17 - This was the bottom of a Christmas cake and now is the sun, from which Superman takes flight ... 18 - In the other automata in preparation, the box is transformed into sets and then becomes part of the story
19 - Today's theme is the sea (apart from Superman ...) and this dolphin flying between starry waves. 20 - This is a whale with a long spray on the back. 21 - And this is an orange octopus traveling on the sea floor.
22 - The orange shark is hunting in a monochrome underwater world ... 23 -  During the presentation, we ask the students to tell us about the difficulties and show movement, structure, characters and decorations. 24 - And here is the video about today's experience.
